Working in the
chemical
engineering consulting role we convinced the Grace
Construction Products Division to make calcium nitrite in the US
by means of a process
design
and the manufacturing economics for it. Provided the process
design for their first calcium nitrite plant in Wilmington, NC.
Because this went so well was also commissioned to do the
process design for their second plant for Augusta, GA.
Each plant was of economic value to the company in penetrating
the re-enforced concrete corrosion inhibitor market..
Provided a detailed process design for a
calcium nitrite plant for
Abocol in Cartagena, Columbia. This study was of great
value to them to make a determination if and how to move forward
with the development and future commercial plan
Designed our 4th calcium nitrite
plant for a client in the Western US. This detailed design, equipment costing and
capital cost estimating was useful for the client to make a
decision not to go ahead with the project because the economics
were not favorable considering an economic downturn.
We received the John C. Valor award for the
development of a sea
water desalination process. This brought good press to the
company and paved the way for a commercial scale desalination
facility for the US west coast.
The Grace Sugar Process development resulted in increasing
the companies patent portfolio for this technology. The
Camet metal monolith
chemical
engineering consulting development resulted in an invention
which combined the electrically heated part with the non
electric part thus making the technology more marketable to the automobile
industry.
The Artificial Pancreas project resulted in an engineering
scope study which was composed of
process/equipment
design and economics. This study was of great value to the
Grace management as it gave an early on look at what the
production cost implications would be for this product.
1962 graduate of Ohio State University with B Sc. and M. Sc.
degrees in Chemical Engineering.
Working Experience at W. R. Grace Research Division from
1962 to 1997.
From 1962 to 1970 was engaged in the
Process Development
Department in the experimental pilot plant development mode for
mostly inorganic and organic chemistry projects. Also
managed this department.
From 1971 to 1973 was appointed to manage the engineering
and production of Ecotrol air and water pollution control
products.
In 1974 started the
Engineering Consulting Department
In this department, which we staffed and managed, provided
process design and economic evaluations for directional support
to the research program.
In January 1997 to the present started Edward T, Woodruff,
Inc. to provide chemical engineering consulting services to the
inorganic, organic, biochemical, and biomedical device
industries.
