Chemical Engineer
A Definition

This information sheet is for your interest and edification.  Perhaps you might want to learn more about contributions and performance results.  If so, go  to Home and Accomplishments.

Edward T. Woodruff received the B. Sc. and M. Sc. degrees in chemical engineering in 1962.  Since that time up until January 1997 we were employed, as an engineer, in the W. R. Grace Research Division.  At that time Grace decided to close the Research Division because there was no longer any synergy with the remaining Grace operating divisions.  We took early retirement and started Edward T. Woodruff, Inc.

Throughout all our working experience, from the beginning to the present, we have made use of most all of our chemical engineering skills.  Our emphasis has focused on the "chemical" aspects as well as on the "engineering" aspects.

The Chemical Engineer is in that engineering discipline that emphasizes chemistry. Those who work as a chemical engineer should have a working knowledge of chemistry and chemical processes. The chemical engineer is also involved in reaction engineering. The chemical engineer engages in mass and heat transfer of chemical products. Fluid flow is a field for the chemical engineer as well.

Those working as a chemical engineer are involved in a variety of areas. The chemical engineer is found in research and development. The chemical engineer is found in process design. The chemical engineer does plant design and construction. Sales are also an area for the chemical engineer. The chemical engineer is in management.

The chemical engineer has been responsible for products and processes that modern society enjoys today. Projects for the chemical engineer have ranged from petroleum and petrochemical products to products coming from natural minerals and deposits. The chemical engineer has produced gasoline. Packaging film has seen the involvement of the chemical engineer. The chemical engineer is working on developing fuel cells for the future electric car.
